WHY: Research Medical Center—part of HCA Midwest Health, Kansas City’s leading healthcare provider—welcomes Giving Hope & Help for its Third Annual Mother’s Day LOVE Bags 4 Cancer Event. Volunteers will distribute LOVE Bags filled with toiletries and inspirational items to offer hospitalized cancer patients support.

Jessica McClellan, Giving Hope & Help’s founder and president, was inspired to create the LOVE Bags initiative in honor of her niece who battled Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.

“Mother’s Day is so special and I can’t imagine spending it in the hospital with cancer,” says McClellan, who launched Giving Hope & Help in 2013. “We want to ensure cancer patients have hope, especially with their challenges.”

Since 2016 Giving Hope & Help has distributed LOVE bags to patients at Research Medical Center on Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day. According to Jackie DeSouza-Van Blaricum, Chief Executive Officer of Research Medical Center, the response from patients, cancer care nurses, families and staff was overwhelming.

“This volunteer community outreach endeavor positively impacts the spirit of our cancer patients, their families and our staff,” she says.  “We welcome opportunities that align with Research Medical Center’s commitment to the care improvement of human life above all. Jessica and her organization give patients a message of compassion and hope.”

Giving Hope & Help receives donations from individuals and companies and have created multiple partnerships with businesses that donate items for the gift bags. They are seeking additional individual and corporate partnerships to fund ongoing LOVE bag giveaways. For more information, visit A portion of the proceeds goes to the American Cancer Society.
