Research Medical Center Celebrates 125th Anniversary

April 06, 2011

When it comes to celebrating birthdays, Research Medical Center has had more than a century of blowing the candles out on the cake. This year marks a particularly illustrious milestone, with the hospital commemorating 125 years of exceptional healthcare service to the community. And just as it established a precedence of pioneering healthcare in a growing area back in 1886, Research Medical Center’s trend of healthcare innovations and advancements has continued throughout the decades.

Research Medical Center will mark its 125th Anniversary from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, with a VIP reception at 2316 E. Meyer Blvd. A presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m. and media is invited to attend.

In addition to its reputation for and high-quality, advanced care, Research Medical Center introduced the Kansas City’s first health insurance plan in the early 1900s, established one of the first community blood banks and brought the first EKG unit to the city.

In late March 2011, Research Medical Center—part of HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City’s largest healthcare network—was ranked No. 3 in the Kansas City metro area in U.S. News & World Report's first-ever Best Hospitals metro area rankings, available online at www.usnews.com/hospitals. Research Medical Center is recognized for its specialties of ear, nose and throat, and kidney disorders.

There are additional centers of excellence that offer personalized, compassionate care to the residents of Greater Kansas City, including the newly expanded Midwest Cancer Care at Research Medical Center, accredited by the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. The Multi-Disciplinary Thoracic Clinic is home to a multi-specialty team of physicians dedicated to offering fast diagnosis and effective treatment options for lung conditions. The Center for Tarlov Cysts provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for patient education, diagnosis and definitive Tarlov cyst and meningeal cyst treatment.

Midwest Heart Care and the Midwest Neuroscience Institute have been recognized with Get the Guidelines™ Gold awards for both heart and stroke care. Midwest Heart Care at Research medical Center is the first Join commission-certified Advanced Heart Failure Center in Kansas and Missouri. Midwest Women’s Care at Research Medical Center offers the services to keep women healthy at all stages of life. The Center for Integrative Therapy offers patients and clients a focus on wellness throughout their journey of health.

Kevin Hicks, chief executive officer of Research Medical Center, reflects on the hospital’s enduring legacy of patient-centric care. “Every day, the physicians and staff of Research Medical Center work to find better, more innovative ways to care for our patients,” says Hicks. “We look forward to many more decades of serving the Kansas City community.”
