Sixth Annual Community Block party and Health Fair Promotes Fit Families

April 27, 2012

For the sixth consecutive year, Research Medical Center—part of HCA Midwest Health System, Kansas City’s largest healthcare network—is gearing up to promote healthy, fit families. Along with Research Medical Center, The Research Foundation will host the hospital’s annual Community Block Party and Health Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 28, 2012, at 2316 E. Meyer Blvd in Kansas City, Missouri.

Research Medical Center invites its neighbors to enjoy free activities and health screenings, carnival games, and local entertainment. More than 90 organizations will offer health information that benefits the whole family. Local celebrity, Chef Jasper Mirabile, Jr. will give live healthy cooking demonstrations at 10:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.

Free health screenings will be available and include blood pressure, blood glucose, Body Mass Index (BMI), bone density, take-home colorectal cancer kits, dental, foot, glaucoma, liver wellness, and vision.

Family-oriented activities available throughout the Community Block Party and Health Fair include free books from the Kansas City Public library, face painting, and a moonwalk. The Cleaver Family YMCA will provide a free family-friendly Zumba class and sports sign-ups. The first 250 children will receive free bicycle helmets from the Brain Injury Association of Kansas and Greater Kansas City. A KCMO Fire Department fire engine will be on hand, along with the BEARCAT Tactical Unit from the KCMO Police Department.

This year’s Community Block Party and Health Fair will feature a half-mile or one-mile family “Fun Walk” at 11 a.m. The first 50 walkers will receive an insulated tumbler, courtesy of the American Heart Association.

“Research Medical Center is committed to healthy living. The annual Community Block Party and Health Fair is a fun opportunity to provide families with useful information to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle,” says Kevin J. Hicks, chief executive officer of Research Medical Center. “The event showcases our dedication in supplying the community with an exceptional level of care.”

First Call Alcohol/Drug Prevention and Recovery will be participating in National Take Back Day throughout the Community Block Party and Health Fair, allowing attendees to turn in unused or expired medication for safe disposal. Local entertainment will perform every half hour. Healthy snacks and beverages will be provided. Additional sponsors of the Community Block Party and Health Fair include the Harmon Diabetes Center, The Research Foundation and the Neighborhood Tourist Development Fund.
