In Research Medical Center’s 131-year history, Pitts is also the first person of color and woman to hold the position of Chief Medical Officer.

Pitts, a board certified internal medicine physician, has more than 20 years of experience as a physician leader. Most recently she served as Senior Vice President for the Kansas City and Wichita region for IPC -The Hospitalist Company/TeamHealth  and Medical Director for Kindred Transitional Care Hospital (long-term acute care) in Kansas City and Encompass Hospice in Lee’s Summit.  Prior to those positions Pitts served as Lead Physician Hospitalist with Midwest Hospitalist Specialists, PA, in Overland Park. Her career experience includes leading and developing physicians and support staff, implementing initiatives to improve patient care and serving on executive leadership committees, among others.

Pitts received her medical degree and a bachelor’s degree in biology from the University of Missouri-Kansas City where she completed a combined six-year program. She did an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Consortium for Health Education in Kansas City and a Fellowship in Hospital Medicine Leadership at the University of California-San Francisco. Pitts was the Past Chair of the National Post-Acute Task Force and was recognized as one of 10 Top Docs by the American College of Physicians.
