If you or someone you know has been sexually assaulted, help is available 24 hours every day by coming directly to Research Medical Center’s Emergency Room, or by calling 911.

At Research Medical Center, sexual assault patients are examined by a Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) in a private setting without distraction. Attention is focused on your care, comfort and emergency assistance.

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner is a Registered Nurse who has received specialized education and fulfilled clinical requirements to perform forensic examinations of patients who report sexual assault.

If you have been assaulted

  • Try to get to a safe place as soon as possible.
  • You may report to law enforcement by calling 911. If possible, call immediately.
  • Try not to change clothes. Do not clean your clothes, bathe or shower. This will help preserve physical evidence.
  • You will probably be asked to go to a hospital emergency room. At the hospital, you will be checked by a SANE (Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner) or a doctor for injuries and physical evidence will be collected.
